Avanika Yammiyavar, 8th Semester Student of School of Architecture Won the “Best Paper Award”for the Oral Presentation of her Research Paper titled- “Evaluating Building Aesthetics using Gestalt Analysis”at the Research Conclave 2019held at IIT Guwahatifrom 14-17thMarch 2019.

ABSTRACT
From an Architecture point of view, the main question being addressed in this paper is – when does one cross the visual line between under-design and over-design especially in the frontage of a building’s Form?
Gestalt Analysis of certain buildings and analysis of the results of experimental survey on a group of buildings indicated that two hypothesis proposed were upheld-
The first hypothesisstated that- more the prevalence and adherence of the design elements in the frontage to Gestalt Principles, higher is the chance of a building’s Form being liked.
The second hypothesisstated that the degree of Symmetry is significant in the building being liked or disliked.
The inferences in this paper in terms of the upheld hypothesis can act as guidelines for an Architect to decide upon the thin line between – under design and over design of a building Form mainly expressed through its frontage.
This paper was written as a part of the 7thsemester course- Dissertation under the guidance of Ar. Vinaya Hiremath.
