A one-day workshop was conducted by School of Civil Engineering during March 2019 to give students a hands-on experience on concrete mix design as per the latest design codes. Er. Vikrant Desai gave a detailed step by step guidelines and pitfalls to look for while designing a concrete. This gave the students an insight of how mix design of concrete is carried out in field. Also, the participants were made to manually work out a mix design for different grades and types. These mixes were then visually demonstrated and casted in the concrete lab which gave the participants a practical aspect of the field.
The concrete canoe competition was the first-of-its-kind competition in Karnataka at the School of Civil Engineering. Since it was conducted for the first time, an introductory workshop was planned on 28th February, 2019 to educate the students about the basic background and the construction of a concrete canoe.
The workshop was divided into 2 parts such as the first part consisted of background, forces acting on a canoe, basic dimensional characteristics and hull profile. The second part consisted on the types of materials used like glass microspheres, metakloin, carbon fibres and flyash. The overall procedure of using the above stated materials to construct a concrete canoe was explained. The materials required for the construction were given to 11 teams who were chosen based on quiz conducted at the end of the workshop. The students were given a month’s time to go back to their parent institutes and design the mix and construct the concrete canoe. All the teams participated with their respective canoes on 28th, 29th and 30th March 2019 during PLEIDES 2019. The canoe was subjected to number of tests like weight carried, speed etc. to determine the winner of the event. The event was able to draw in large number of interested students from different colleges.
