Data Science and AI in Astronomy and Astrophysics
The morning of 30th September witnessed an inspiring confluence of intellect and curiosity at KLE Technological
University’s auditorium as the stage was graced by the eminent Dr. Ajit Kembhavi, a renowned astrophysicist and
former director of Inter University centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, (IUCAA) Pune.
Dr. Prakash Tewari, Vice Chancellor KLE Tech and Dr. Uma Mudenagudi, Dean R&D KLE Tech. felicitated Dr. Ajit
Kembhavi, with a flower bouquet and a memento thereby making the commencement of the much anticipated event
Soon, the auditorium brimming with eager students fell into attentive silence as Dr. Kembhavi began his captivating
talk on how Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are transforming modern astronomy and reshaping our
understanding of the universe.
Dr. Ajit Kembhavi stated his speech with a small analogy where he compared an AI facility in China, which he had
recently visited with that of KLE Tech’s facility expressing his optimism and enthusiasm about India’s promising
future in technology and innovation
Then gradually, he led the audience through the foundational concepts of AI, explaining algorithms, neural networks,
transformers, generative AI, and large language models, making complex topics remarkably accessible.
He also drew a comparison between Artificial neural Network and Convolutional neural network with diagrams and
visual representations which was equally captivating for the audience, before shifting the discussion toward the
fascinating interplay between data and astronomy.
He elaborated on how vast astronomical data sets enable scientists to decode the mysteries of galaxies, star
systems, and even black holes — all complemented by stunning photographs captured at observatories across India.
Dr. Ajit Kembhavi, in his closing statement advised the youngsters on to embrace Artificial Intelligence as a
largely self-driven learning journey, urging them to stay curious and make the most of the tools and resources
available to them.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, followed by insightful closing remarks from Prof. B. L. Desai,
Executive Dean, who highlighted the significance of the day’s discussion and inspired students to channel their
learning towards meaningful innovation.
In essence it was an insightful morning filled with science, technology and vision that left the audience in awe
with interesting insights and knowledge.
